Red Sox Need a Game to Clinch

Monday night did not consist of just bad news for the Boston Red Sox. Unfortunately, there was a good deal of it. Michael Bowden again showed that he is not yet ready to play in the big leagues and perform at a high level, as he gave up seven earned runs in just three innings, including two home runs. Also, Josh Beckett was scratched as he encountered back spasms. Luckily, the team is optimistic that he will be ready come playoff time.

To top it all off, the Sox lost to the Blue Jays in a rain shortened game, falling 11-5 in just under seven full innings. Despite losing, Kevin Youkilis managed two home runs while David Ortiz hit one. Youk has 27 on the season, while Big Papi has 28. Ortiz leads the majors in home runs since he hit his second dinger on June 6th.

The good news for Boston, the Texas Rangers lost their game against the Angels, setting the Red Sox magic number to clinch the wild card at just one. This means that the team can either win a game or have Texas lose one to clinch a playoff berth. The Red Sox have been playing very poorly recently, losing four-in-a-row, but luckily for them, the Rangers have not been able to capitalize on their opportunities, as they too have struggled.

The Sox hope that Clay Buchholz will be able to stop the Red Sox skid at four, putting Boston in the playoffs.
