Despite Controversy, Papi Comes Through

David Ortiz was supposedly one of the 104 names listed on the anonymous list of players who tested positive for utilizing performance-enhancing drugs. According to Nomar Garciaparra (former teammate of Ortiz and current Oakland Athletic), natural supplements from GNC could result in a positive result. Ortiz seems confused that he had tested positive, and has not said anything about using steroids. He said that he will try to find out what substance made the test return a positive result, and speak publicly about his findings.

Despite the added pressure and significance of the allegations, Big Papi hit a go-ahead, three-run bomb to center field to lead the Sox to a victory by a final score of 8-5.

Jon Lester had a great start to the afternoon, as he got through the first eight Athletics' hitters without giving up a base runner. He continued to pitch well into the sixth, where he ran into some trouble. He failed to get a couple border-line calls, and he let his frustration get to him, giving up four runs in the inning. The bullpen pitched very well, giving up just one run in their 4 1/3 innings.

In the 7th inning, Kevin Youkilis kept a two-out inning alive by doubling to right field. It was an unusual base-hit, as right fielder Jack Cust lost a fly ball in the son. The ball landed next to Cust, who then proceeded to knee the ball further away from him, allowing Youkilis to reach 2nd base. Jason Bay followed with a walk, and David Ortiz then launched his three-run home run. The Sox added two insurance runs in the 8th, and Jonathan Papelbon earned his 26th save by closing out the game.
