The Red Sox came off an 8-4 victory last night, and were handing the ball to their ace, Josh Beckett. Unfortunately, Beckett continued his recent struggling streak, as he allowed five runs in just six innings of work. Josh did compile nine strikeouts, however the high K total was countered by the two home runs he gave up. In the 8th inning, the Sox were able to score with the bases loaded, thanks to a J.P. Howell wild pitch. This would knot the score up at five runs apiece. In the bottom of the frame, Ramon Ramirez was charged with two runs without recording an out, while Manny Delcarmen gave up a home run to Evan Longoria while only recording one out. At that point, Boston was down 8-5, and the team was unable to climb back. Delcarmen has had major troubles the second half of the season, but he has shown the ability to battle back and play well down the stretch in the past. Tonight, Jacoby Ellsbury (one steal to put him at 56 for the season) and Dustin Pedroia had 0/5 nights and 0/4 nights respectively. If Boston wants to win games they need these two hitters to get on base more consistently, and they need to stop stranding runners on the base paths. Tonight they left nine men on base. The Sox are now five games up on the Rays in the wildcard, and 2.5 up on the Rangers. Return to Red Sox News |
