The Red Sox have owned the Baltimore Orioles this entire season. After winning tonight's game 11-5, the Sox now own a 15-2 head-to-head record against the birds. Keep in mind, one of those two wins was the miracle comeback when the O's scored 10 runs in a single inning. Tonight, it was Jon Lester who earned the win. He did not have a spectacular outing, but he pitched 6+ innings while giving up three runs and striking out four. Offensively, Josh Reddick got the scoring started for Boston, as he hit a two-run homer in the second inning. With Baltimore leading 3-2 going into the sixth, the Red Sox managed a run, tying the game. In the 7th, the Sox earned three more runs, and in the eight, J.D. Drew led a 5-run charge with a three-run bomb which was promptly followed by a Brian Anderson solo shot. The Sox had an 11-3 margin going into the bottom of the ninth, when Manny Delcarmen allowed two runs. Luckily, Ramon Ramirez was able to keep the game out of reach for the O's, giving Boston an 11-5 win. Delcarmen was lights out in the beginning of the season, but it seems like ever since the All-Star break he has been a different pitcher due to his lack of success. Billy Wagner will likely fill in for Manny in the post season if Delcarmen continues to struggle. All in all, a solid team win against the reeling Orioles, and the magic number in the Wild Card is now down to 9. Return to Red Sox News |
