Angels Bomb Papelbon to Win ALDS

The Red Sox' playoff hopes were swept away by the Angels on Sunday, as Los Angeles walked into Boston and beat the Sox 7-6 in Game 3 of the ALDS. The Red Sox bats finally showed up, but it was not enough for normally stellar closer Jonathan Papelbon.

Paps had a two-run lead going into the top of the ninth, where he quickly got two outs, and then unraveled. The Sox were literally one strike away from forcing Game 4, twice. Papelbon missed on both opportunities to shut the door, and eventually allowed the Angels to not only tie, but also take the lead. The Sox were not able to recover in the bottom of the ninth, and just like that, the season ended.

Jacoby Ellsbury played very well in the series, especially defensively. Despite the loss, he deserves to be recognized. He made multiple spectacular plays to rob Angels players of possible extra base hits, and in Game 2 tripled and scored the Red Sox' only run.

J.D. Drew also showed up, as in Game 3 he hit a home run for Boston. Clay Buchholz, in his first post season start, went 5+ innings and gave up two runs, a very respectable outing.

Unfortunately, there was a lot more bad than good. David Ortiz went 1-for-12, and his postseason dominance has clearly diminished, Victor Martinez went 1-11, and Dustin Pedroia had all kinds of offensive problems.

The Red Sox were clearly outplayed by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, who seemed to just want it more.
